Garden Update

harvesting-lettuce

We are gardening with friends this year, helping out with their large garden in exchange for food. We go out there weekly and do what needs to be done. Each week, we can’t wait to go! The time we spend there is great family time. We work and laugh together — priceless times. Beginning a garden is alot of work without much payoff — yet. But we’re beginning to see fruit.

Checking Things Off My List

Aloe Vera and Microgreens

This week has been so good for me. I really needed the break from school, more than the kids, I think. I am working my way through my list, but I do keep sneaking breaks to read Pride and Prejudice. I feel compelled to re-read it after I watch the movie. The movie is just [...]

Help With My Aloe Vera?

I bought an aloe vera plant last fall. The lady who sold it to me said it would fill up its pot by spring and need separating… she was right! There are so many shoots. I’m excited that I’ve managed to keep it alive and help it thrive through the winter. I keep it in [...]

Buckwheat Greens May Be Toxic?

Oh, my. I was just looking around at the www.sproutman.com website (specifically, his article section). He’s got a link to a PDF article explaining that consuming large amounts of buckwheat greens may cause people to become phototoxic, or sensitive to light. The article cites veterinary scientific research that the author, Gilles Arbour, backs up with [...]

Sprouting v. Hydroponics and Other Questions

The book I got yesterday is called “Sprouts: The Miracle Food” by Steve Meyerowitz. It is subtitled with “The Complete Guide to Sprouting.” I am thrilled that it is a relatively new publication (1999). I have been reading it avidly since I picked it up yesterday. He’s got a website. I haven’t been there yet. [...]

Microgreens Progress… and a Bit About Sprouts

I wrote on August 25, 2007 that I was going to try to grow microgreens. I royally messed up that first set of microgreens — buckwheat, sunflower and flax. According to Jeff, I sterilized them. That’s because I was so concerned about keeping them warm enough that I kept them covered all the time and [...]

Blackberry Picking

Sweet Blackberries We went to a friend’s yesterday to pick blackberries. They many acres scattered with blackberry patches. Their 4 boys took us from bush to bush. What a blessing. I couldn’t believe how abundant God’s plan of creation is. Plenty for humans and animals. Haniya, Naomi and Mikah — my fickle pickers We picked [...]

Microgreens

I have been buying tons of buckwheat and sunflower microgreens at the Farmer’s Market each week. The people there said that with as much as I buy, I should grow my own. I agree. So they sold me 5 pounds each of whole buckwheat and sunflower seeds. I will plant those and also some flax [...]

Second Work Day Exchange

On our first work day exchange we went to our friends’ house so Jeff could help them build a rock wall. Yesterday, they came here to help us with a big project. Our project actually started two weeks ago when we had four madrone trees cut down that were in between our house and pole [...]

Temporary Strawberry Planter

We were given a bunch of everbearing strawberry plants from the young lady at church who plays the violin in our little trio of flute, violin and piano. I really wanted them and so I said yes to receiving them even though our garden spot is not ready. Yesterday afternoon the children and I planted [...]
