We gave Mikah a motorized Erector set for his 9th birthday. We’ve been so busy with the barn and school (and dishes, to his dismay) that he’s not had much time to devote to it. Until this weekend.

He built that helicopter almost entirely by himself. I think it is remarkable because it is no easy feat to decipher the directions and work with the tiny screws and nuts.

He thinks it is pretty cool that the picture shows the propellers spinning.

We think Mikah is cool.

We got 10 pounds of local cherries yesterday, along with berries, pears and peaches. We are loving it all!

We are getting ready for a busy weekend. Tomorrow we are having friends over for lunch. The next day we go to a wedding and also, Jeff’s parents arrive to pick up the kids for the annual California trip. So today is our only day to clean.

Thus the point.

I sent Mikah to clean his room. Then he came to me and said he was done and he’d wait in his room for me to check it. I finally got there and this is how I found him. Laying on his bed, happily enjoying a cherry break.

Good food floats his boat like nothing else.

And his room looks pretty good, too. Now he is vaccuuming. I suppose he thinks he’ll get more cherries after this.

Meet Mr. Silly Putty. Mikah invited him to dinner and Naomi poked him full of toothpick holes. He currently resides on the dining room window.

Today we had to go into town because Haniya needed her headgear (braces) adjusted. It was an unplanned trip, so we made a day of it and went to a park on the Umpqua River. It was a bit rainy and windy, but not terribly so during the time we were there. We have to go back to town tomorrow for to see the dentist, so we’ve planned to have lunch at the river again. Mikah especially is happy about this.

This was the good part of today. On the whole, we have had some challenges today. But you know what? We are all still smiling. All of it happened to Haniya. Since there were so many hurdles in her day, I am just going to list them and save you the trouble of having to count.

1) Unbeknownst to her, Haniya’s glasses (in the case) slipped out of her pocket when she was taking her muck boots off to get in the truck. We drove on out. She realized after just a couple seconds that they were missing. We hadn’t even left the driveway. She got out to find them. Naomi got out to help. I looked in the rearview mirror to find Haniya sobbing, holding up a completely crushed glasses’ case. We had driven over it. Wonder of wonders, her glasses looked a little wonky, but we thought they’d be okay. First stop: eye doctor. The ladies there warned us that the metal had been stressed and might break when adjusted. But no! It did not break! We witnessed a miracle today, I am telling you. We are all sooo thankful.

2) The metal contraption do-dad that hooks into the bands on Haniya’s teeth (part of the headgear/neckgear thing) broke off. Now that metal had been stressed during its adjustment earlier in the day. Thankfully, we are going to the dentist tomorrow and they have promised to remove the part that is still stuck in her mouth. It isn’t causing any discomfort. On Friday, we will have to go to town (again, three days this week!) to get a new headgear do-dad contraption thing.

Should I go on?

3) Haniya stabbed herself with the knife on her Leatherman. The accident could have been prevented and she now knows how. This injury is plaguing her.

4) Haniya took a tumble at the park (Mikah was chasing her). Now she has a scraped up hand and sore wrist.

I tell you, she has been crying alot today. And smiling just as much, by the grace of God, which makes me proud of her.

You may also notice that we, none of us, were speaking too kindly. I think it was the surprise of actually starting a fire and the anxiety we all felt about keeping it going (which ultimately failed).

Each week when the girls are having their piano lesson, Mikah and I must find something to do. We usually run a couple of errands but still have some time left. At the church where the girls take their lessons, we usually spend this downtime just waiting in the parking lot.  There is a tree for Mikah to climb and a little ravine filled with cattails. Last week, I convinced him not to open them up, but he still wore many seeds home.
