Wool Sock Experiment

No, I am not knitting wool socks. No time for that. My projects have to be fast. ;)

Before I tell you about my experiment, let me make a confession.

I have dry feet. Really dry feet. It is gross.

Now I have to back up in time to set up this experiment.

In the spring, I bought some black cotton socks for Jeff, so he wouldn’t have to wear his medium-weight wool-blend socks in the hot summer. He began wearing the cotton socks when the weather warmed up. After a few weeks, he said to me, “My feet are dry. I think it is these cotton socks.” He went back to wearing his wool-blend socks and his feet got soft again.

Lightbulb moment.

I wear cotton socks almost all year. I have dry feet. I would even slather on lotion almost every night and go to bed with cotton socks to keep the lotion in place.

Jeff never has dry feet. He wears wool-blend socks all year. He only got dry feet when he started wearing cotton socks.

So I began an experiment of my own.

For two months, I have been wearing wool socks. Not all the time, but most of the time. I stopped wearing cotton socks altogether.

My feet are softening. I have not put on lotion for weeks.

This is a miracle. I can’t explain it. But I know I like it. And I’m getting ready to order me some new wool socks.

And then there are those of us who don’t wear socks OR shoes most of the year… lol

    Glad you made that discovery!

Wardeh, I’m currently having major dry feet right now…it has come and gone over the years, but it is definitely here to stay for right now. I drink tons of water, put on lotion, and never, ever go barefoot. Always have worn cotton socks, so I’m willing to give this a try. Can you purchase wool socks in the stores, or only online? Where do you purchase yours? Maybe we could combine some shipping costs if we ordered some together? Let me know!

    Julieanne,

In the fall, wool socks go on sale at Bi-Mart and that’s what I’ve been wearing so far. BUT, they wear out. All my socks from last year have holes in them. I’m not sure if it is from not wearing shoes or because they’re not as high quality. I’m going to try ordering from Cabela’s this time and would be happy to do it with you to save shipping. They are pricier – but it is the kind Jeff has and he’s gone through two years with Cabela’s socks and no holes (but he also doesn’t wear them around the house like I do – he usually has shoes on). What do you think?

    hi wardeh! welcome back.

i used to have dry feet. i dont wear socks at all for half the year, and when i do i probably only use cotton 1/2 the time. anyway, my feet used to be pretty dry but i started rubbing them with mineral oil before bed (and then putting socks over, or occasionally just putting down an old towel under them in summer because i sleep too hot with socks on…) and the oil does so much more than any lotion i have tried (including very renowned/expensive ones).

just a thought- it may speed up the softening! and i am going to get more wool socks for the winter, though my husband wears mostly cotton and has very soft feet, hmm…

    Hello,
I bet its because of the lanolin in the wool socks. :o ) I wear wool all winter long and buy them at our local flea market. Have you ever been to a flea market where there isnt at least ONE sock seller? LOL I am an avid flea marketer and thrift storer.

BTW, just found your blog and love it! I love how you intermingle lots of things over just concentrating on one thing. LOVE the apron remake…something I have been wanting to do for a while as I am an avid apron wearer.

    YOU ROCK.
    God Bless,

    Hi, Mom!

That’s funny, you’re feet are dry, then you start wearing wool, and they transform. :D Cool…

It makes sense, I have never heard about wool socks keeping your feet moist, but it does make sense.
I live in the desert, but wear socks all winter. I’m thinking this winter it’s wool socks and I have a Cabela’s store within 5 miles.
Once again, thanks for the tip.
btw: are you gearing up for a new year of homeschool?
    Jen

Jen – aren’t you blessed to have Cabela’s so close! We are in school mode. We started up again last week and had a great week. We’re all happy to get back to routines and learning. :) How about you? Did you take a summer break or go all the way through? I always enjoy hearing about your grandsons!

Since I had my baby, I am almost always too warm even in Minnesota. But before that, I wore wool socks year round. They lasted for years, too. I actually buy men’s wool hunting socks, maybe that’s why they last so long.
