Giving Mikah a Haircut

Mikah’s hair was getting too long to be manageable, so I gave him a haircut yesterday. Not too much, just about four inches off. We never did take any pictures of him “finished”. But really, it is not too different.

I feel like we get a bit of flak about keeping his hair long. I can only point to a couple things people have said or done that suggest they think we’re wrong (or at the least, strange) to let his hair grow long. This makes me feel bad. It is just hair after all. However, it is the hair God gave Mikah, an even more important point.

Mikah’s heart is God’s, and that is what matters. If we lived in a culture where long hair was the norm (as it was in Jesus’ time), then no one would think anything of this. The length of one’s hair is a superficial choice, not a heart matter.

Yet, seeing how God blessed Mikah with some beautiful features, it gives us reason to rejoice in the Lord’s creation. That surely seems good, not wrong.

I love Mikah’s hair and so do my Grandsons.
I am surprised that anyone would have a negative comment regarding Mikah. Your website is enormous evidence of the quality life you are providing for your children.
I guess we could all say Jesus wore sandals and needed a hair cut.

    Wardeh,

I’m not surprised about ‘people’, and I’ll just leave it at that *grin*
However, your right ~ it’s the heart, yours and his and your authority as his parents that counts here.

Okay I can’t leave it totally alone…… There is such a STRONG movement/pressure toward works (out word) ….. I have been soooooo impressed with your’s and Jeff’s ability not to get caught up in such things, with all the pressure to do so. This shows a real personal relation with our Lord on your parts, and God given strength. To love and serve God is to spend enough time at His feet to hear His instruction to you, and then DO IT. Okay, that’s enough on that :-) Stepping off the box now.

Mikah’s hair and heart are wonderful ~ people will always be uncomfortable when you are not making the same choices they are, except this and be at peace, it’s ‘normal’, and their intentions are good ~ try not to feel bad about it.

Love you guys (just as you are) Blessings!

All I can say is that Jen Lannholm’s last comment says it all!

I heard a quote somewhere–but I don’t recall the source now–where someone said: Never has something of so little significance caused so much grief as the hair styles of youth.

Sorry people give you flak. I’m not surprised, but it is sad.

He is so darn funny and cute! I think if I were his parent, I would struggle to ever be stern with him, without cracking up! :) I bet you have to bite your lip sometimes! :)

I resonate with your chafing against the pressure to cut his hair short. I think that in general, this phenomenon of societal pressure can be a positive force, helping human beings live in relative harmony with each other. But sometimes I think people just get carried away, unconsciously pressuring others to conform on trivial matters, that would limit our individuality too much.

Hair style has got to be one of those instances, though I suppose our preoccupation with it is not new. Maybe you could get him an elaborate 17th/18th century men’s wig, and then see what people say! :D

If Mikah likes his hair, let him be! I certainly know many masculine men with long hair.
