Nubians

We have three new members of our little farm ~ Nubian goats, a mama with her 2 baby does. Everything has been so crazy, what with shopping around for them and going to get them and worrying about their safety (around Trouble, the cow) and… that this is going to be really quick.

You can’t really see her, but that is Silver Belle, the 2 year old Nubian doe. I love her coloring! In a few years, I’m going to look like her. (I find more greys every day.) Her babies are those bits of brown underneath and behind. They were all over the back of my brother’s ForeRunner!

My brother is here visiting us. He let us use his truck to bring the goats home. He came all the way from Seattle to help us out. ;) Not really! It has been fun having him here and we’re sad he’s leaving tomorrow. He is a great complimenter of my cooking and I love that. Oh, the sweetest part is that when he arrived on Saturday, he brought me a bouquet of roses for Mother’s Day. Ahh… what a brother! So I was really blessed by all my family over the weekend. Jeff joked that for Mother’s Day he was giving me more work to do (milking, cheese-making, yogurt-making, etc.).

I have more to share about what we’ve been doing but right now I’m off to Hoegger Goat Supply to buy a milking bucket and strainer. For when I figure out how to milk a goat, now that we finally have one. This is a dream come true. I can’t tell you how excited I am! We all are!

Cool! Praying the milking goes according to plan. If anyone is capable of getting it done it is Wardeh Harmon. :-) Love, Mary

    • Wardeh says:

Mary ~ you’re so sweet! I’m sure it *won’t* go according to plan ~ but what does? Certainly nothing with me! He, ha. But we roll with it, by God’s grace. Love, Wardeh

  2. Wardeh, I am so excited for you! You will love having all that milk to work with. I sometimes miss all our goat and cow milk that we had some years ago…. but I don’t miss all the work that comes along with having animals too much. ;o)

Sylvia — oh, the work. I think I’m ready for it. I think it will help keep me off the computer so much and help me keep the kitchen in better order out of necessity. Plus, the milk! Man, I can’t wait. My brother is helping me right now with a milking stand. We were given one that fits dwarf goats and we’re taking it apart and rebuilding it for full-size goats. I’m so thankful for his help! I hope you find a good, affordable source for raw milk, then you can put that $3 cheese press to work!

      Love, Wardeh

You make me wish that we had bought a home where we could have a little home. Maybe when Doug retires in 7-10 we will do that. I figure it will keep us young in our 60s!! I plan to keep reading your post and learning so I’m ready! Oh I’m a new grandma, baby number 5 a little girl Lucy Ann. So I’m playing Nana withe the two other kiddos of the family, fun fun.
    blessings, Erin

OPps should have proofed that, I mean should have bought a home where we could have a little farm!

    Wow, that’s what you’ve been up to….

I was thinking, but afraid to butt my nose in, that you should get some milking goats and sell/lease out your mini-goats. But it seems you were a head of me *grin*

Well, many blessings on you and your new additions! I’m so happy for you I could squeal (a girl thing).

How wonderful that you had the love, attention and help from your brother, what a blessing. I’m glad your sharing and counting your blessings with all of us here on the blog…

I guess this explains why you didn’t reply to my email asking about your ginger-ale experiment…. You’ve been busy, surprise surprise.

Happy (day after) Mother’s Day Wardeh, I’m glad your enjoying life out on your little farm.

    Love, Jami

    • Wardeh says:

Jami — yes, that’s where I’ve been! But I didn’t get your email :( I’m pretty sure I would have answered it. The ginger soda isn’t done yet. I tasted it last week and it was super sweet. We’re going without any sugars this month, so I’m waiting for it to be on the sour side. I hope it works. It is bubbly and appears to be on track.

Happy Mother’s Day to you, Jami~ thanks for the excitement! I know how well you share it. :D

      Love, Wardeh

Oh, milking was my absolute favorite chore when we had our homestead! Rhythmic, peaceful, quiet… Of course, it helps to have a willing milker like our Ol’ Sal. Mmmmm, I bet that milk will be goooood!

  7. Marg says:

What fun! I’m happy for you, Wardeh. It’s going to be an adventure I know you’ll enjoy. Personally, I’d love to hear updates.
