Okay, Now I Feel Better!

Yesterday, I got to the point where I couldn’t stand it anymore! I’m talking about my house. Too bad I can’t ditch it for a new one, at least not yet. We live in a fairly-new manufactured home and I am thankful that God has given it to us to provide us with shelter, warmth, and safety, but we have dreams for something different. Someday, the home of our dreams will come… or maybe not.

In the meantime, I was sick of the messes, sick of being depressed about the messes, just sick of it all.

So I got to work, and then the kids joined me and that was a joy for me to have them pitching in cheerfully, sometimes without me asking.

First we had to fix the vacuum. One of my dear children vacuumed up a paper clothing tag during a previous vacuuming, which clogged the hose, which then prevented the roller from turning, which then caused the belt to burn out from the heat of the whatever-thing-it-is-that-turns-the-roller. But with our spare belt, Mikah’s flashlight, my sewing tweezers, and a garbage bag, we had all the right tools for that job.

The vacuuming led to decluttering/straightening/dusting bookshelves, cleaning the yucky space in between the wall and the carpet (no baseboards), putting little things away, clearing off the table, clearing off the counters, planting our living Christmas tree in a pot outside (thank you Naomi), wiping red clay mud marks off doorways, washing muddy laundry room floors, straightening shoe areas, taking cardboard to the shop to join a mountain of other being-saved cardboard…

Today, I will finish the dusting, clean the bathrooms, and clean cobwebs and vents. I don’t have to touch the kitchen because Naomi and I cleaned the top of the kitchen cupboards last week. And thanks to my mom (when she was here in November), all the light fixtures are clean (thank you!)

What I haven’t touched (much) is my sewing area. Truth be told, I’m holding out for a new house and a sewing room with a door that can be closed.

Is it possible, tell me… is it even imaginable to conceive… that a sewing room could ever be clean? Please tell me no. I don’t believe it is and I’m sticking to that.

Does your sewing room have a doorway? I was thinking maybe a tension rod could go in the doorway with a curtain hanging from it. Some tension rods will extend up to 8 ft–that would require no hardware.
I sometimes use one in a doorway in front of the door that faces the north–blocks some cold air during windy winter days.

That’s a good idea, April, though unfortunately it won’t work here. My sewing area is a corner of the family room and it is openly connected (meaning, no doorway) to the dining room.

Sure it’s possible to keep clean, if you never use it! My sewing room is clean right now only because I haven’t been in there. When I am in production mode, forget it. I like the way it looks when I have been busy though, makes me feel productive :)

I love to go through the house cleaning and organizing. I live with my daughter but usually I don’t want to clean because with five children under ten and we three adults, one dog, three cats and now a parakeet and living in the country it gets dirty so fast so I get discouraged. So dusty here. I love to sew also and would sew more but at this farmhouse now I definately have no private place to sew and leave a project out safely. I onswtantly carry things up and down the stairs or have to close up all the boxes and machine too. I love wool too and think I will try making some headbands sometime when I get the right material. I do love living with my daughter and family though so I am not unhappy with that. Life is a blast here! ;o) Blessings.

Sounds like you had a very productive day!!

  5. I love those days when I get a lot done. Hmmm…. is this crazy? Probably, but what about one of those curved shower rods that mounts to the ceiling…they come in curved and L shaped…and a really pretty homemade curtain hanging from that curved rod….

Our “craft room” is never clean. Thankfully it is it’s own room which means I can close the door on it. The only sad part is that we no longer have a guest room, so no place for granny and papa when they visit.

Whenever we have been busy the craft room stays a bit messy, then I finally clean it up, only to mess it up again! But I find it hard to start on a new sewing project when it is messy. My husband and I share the room, so there can be animosity if one of us leaves out our crafting material in the other’s way, but we still manage! Thanks for all of your sewing tips and such, I’ve learned a lot from you.
