Bernina Straight Stitch Foot #13

bernina-13-footThought I’d show you one of the new sewing machine feet I got recently. This is Bernina’s #13 straight-stitch foot. It is good for (quoting from Bernina.com) “all straight stitch work such as seaming, quilt piecing and topstitching. The small needle hole provides excellent fabric control. This foot is especially useful with difficult or delicate fabrics such as charmeuse, fine silks, etc. The toes of this foot are open and provide very good visibility while stitching. Use the edges of the foot for approximate 1/4″ and 1/8″ seam allowance.

Go to Bernina.com and you’ll a video using the foot… too cool!

So far I’ve been using it for all my top-stitching and stay-stitching. I love that with the skinny little 1/8″ edge, I  can see what I’m doing to create a 1/8″ seam allowance. I don’t anticipate using delicate fabrics very often, but it has been great so far for just everyday uses — like narrow seam allowances and being able to see what I’m doing.

No, I’m not a Bernina salesperson. ;) I just love a good sewing machine accessory that makes sewing easier and better!

My friend who got the foot for me (rejoicevermore on ebay), recommended using it with a narrow zig-zag (even though Bernina says the foot is only for straight stitches). I tried it and think it will be wonderful for applying thin elastic to the edge of doll clothes, panties, swimming suits, etc. Haven’t done it yet, but I’ve got big plans….

Still speaking of sewing, here’s a really cool video (also shared by my friend) that shows you how cool it is to have a binder. Watch the video and you’ll see how a binder accessory can apply bias binding around a potholder’s edges in a flash. http://www.thequiltshow.com/bernina/5.html

What have you been sewing or creating lately? Please share, whether big or small!

(Featured in the photo is the neckline of a denim overdress I made for a friend’s daughter. The little silver beads make butterfly shapes all over the denim.)

I have made flannel rag quilts for five of the grandies but not yet for the newest ones born in 2008. I also made a sun bonnet for a grandaughter and want to make more of these for the summer. blessings.
