I really get excited about sewing, as you probably know by now. And I love using binding, both on woven and knit fabrics. I have a coverstitch machine and a binder accessory for that, and while it works wonderfully on knits, it doesn’t do wovens for me without skipping stitches. I have used it off and on (such as on these summer pjs), but not without some frustration.
A friend, a great seamstress, helped me find a low-shank adapter, along with an adjustable low-shank binder foot for my Bernina 1001 sewing machine. She also fitted me up with two other fun feet, which I hope to have opportunity to show you at some point. Today, let’s just see how great this little binder foot is!
This foot fits a range of sizes of binding (purchased or self-made) up to 1-inch finished. You need to use triple fold binding (each edge folded in and then the whole strip folded in half). I found it a bit tricky to set it up the first time, but after that it was easy enough that Naomi was soon using it without difficulty. She’s nine.
On my first practice, I was able to apply the binding neatly and evenly, using both a straight stitch and a zigzag. I love to use zigzag. This little foot is going to be such a time and energy-saver, on woven garments, accessories and quilts. I could have used it a million times over already, had I had it before now.
If you can get one, I highly recommend it. You’d want to check with your dealer or a knowledgeable seamstress (such as my friend who sells on ebay) to find the right foot for your machine. My friend is now helping me find snap-on binder feet to fit Haniya’s and Naomi’s Janome sewing machines.

Great post. Thanks for the link. I have a bernina (much older I’m sure – it’s 25 years old). I would love this attachment. I will have to check it out. You are SO helpful. God Bless. Mary
Hello, I just found your site and love it. I also have a bernina sewing machine, and they have 3 very lovely books just on the types of “feet” you can buy for your machine. My husband has bought me all 3 books and they are wonderful. Hope this helps you.
