Project Gutenberg

I’ve mentioned Project Gutenberg before, but it struck me today that it was time to share it again.

Project Gutenberg is a source that offers free e-book downloads for 25,000 classic literature titles. (They have a total of 100,000 titles.) This is how I first read North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

I’m about to read Lady Susan by Jane Austen, the only Jane Austen book I’ve never read.

And here’s my favorite book of all time: Pride and Prejudice. So if you’ve never read it, here’s your chance!

Just for fun: Project Gutenberg’s Top 100 Downloads. (P & P is #3.)

I would love to hear your suggestions of other classic books I should try to find there. What are your favorite classics?

  1. My husband first introduced me to Project Gutenberg. And guess what the first book I read there was! Lady Susan! It was also the one Jane Austen I hadn’t read. I liked the way that she used letters to give you insights into character.

I recommend Daddy Long-legs, read that on Project Gutenberg as well. Also read Frankenstein there. Do you have any recommendations?

Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorites as well. I am sure I could quote you paragraphs from the book! And thank you for talking about Foyle’s war. I watched and enjoyed it.

  2. Sangeeta,

Now I can’t wait to read Lady Susan after you mentioning the letters.

And I’m jealous because you watched Foyle’s War — I didn’t because I was too tired to stay up! So we’ll have to get it on Netflix. You liked it then? I really would like to see how Foyle gets back into his old job… I assume he does.

Thanks for the recommendation for Daddy Long-Legs. I don’t have any recommendations other than Elizabeth Gaskell. North and South is really very good and so is Wives and Daughters. I haven’t read any other authors. I would like to read Daniel Deronda by oh, can’t remember his name, but I just remembered that I have that book on the shelf from the used bookstore. It really is more fun to have a book in hand, but if you can’t get that, Project Gutenberg is the next best thing!

I just love it when someone is excited about the same thing I am! Thank you for sharing my excitement!

    Love, Wardeh

  3. I see that Pride and Prejudice was the number 3 downloaded book today!

  4. Dear Wardeh,

I love it when someone is excited about the same thing as I am as well! I will definetely read Elizabeth Gaskell. I too prefer a book in hand but Project Gutenberg is the next best thing!

  5. I have been to the Project Gutenberg site, but I just can’t get into reading downloaded books. LOL I like a book in the hand, so I visit the library often. :D

  6. Wardeh, have you ever read anything written by Elizabeth Goudge? I think she wrote mainly in the 1930s or so. Her book, “Green Dolphin Street” found in our local library, was the one book I read after about 6 years of not reading a single book due to having young children around the house. That book was so interesting to me that it got me hooked on reading again! While I rarely buy books for myself, I did buy a copy of that one, so if you’d like to borrow it, you’re welcome to it!

  7. Julieanne, it sounds wonderful and I would like to borrow it. Thank you! I know I have seen the movie. It was my one of my mom’s favorite movies from growing up and she got it once so we could see it. Love, Wardeh
