The only benefit of being waken at 5 am by Jeff turning on PBS to the re-run of the Nightly Business Report was that I got to hear the news that Foyle’s War Season 5 begins on PBS’ Masterpiece this Sunday. The Masterpiece website hints that this is the final season. Sad. There will be three episodes this time, 90 minutes each, running on the three Sundays between July 13 and July 27. In our area, it airs at 9 pm. This is a little late for me, but I think I might stay up. The setting…
It’s April 1944, and victory is at hand for the Allies. But underneath the swell of anticipation and relief lurk resentment, recrimination and regret. A year has passed since DCS Foyle (Michael Kitchen) abruptly resigned from the Hastings Police, and his former colleagues are still struggling to adjust to life without him. While Foyle plods away on a writing project, Sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Howell) is contemplating leaving the force and Samantha Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks) is at loose ends after having been fired by Foyle’s replacement, the irascible DCS Meredith.
The main star is Michael Kitchen. We also like him from The Railway Children (another Masterpiece). He has this weird habit of chewing on his lip. I know this bugs Jeff. Me, not so much. Jeff noticed that I was chewing my lip alot after we began watching the episodes. I am trying to quit.
The whole cast is great. Sergeant Milner is played by the same actor (Anthony Howell) who plays Roger Hamley in Wives & Daughters. He’s great. And Honeysuckle Weeks, who plays Sam, is a sweetie. I can’t remember where we’ve seen her.
Our library system owns most of the series discs. The ones they don’t have (season 4) we requested from Netflix.
