Reusable Cloth Grocery Bag

Cloth Grocery BagYesterday I made a cloth grocery bag following this pattern:

Cloth Grocery Bag Pattern from Jan Andrea @ Sleeping Baby Crafts

They are great instructions. Even so, I had trouble with a couple of things. Could just be me. ;) For instance, because of doing the French seams, there is alot of bulk to sew over when crossing those seams. I had to use a “hump-jumper”, a needle case, to keep the presser foot level.

Also, because of treating the lining and the outer as one piece, the gusset triangles are left on the inside of the bag, instead of hidden in between the layers. I decided to go back and tack it down.

Next time, I think I’ll make wider handles. The 1″ handles are a little skinnier than I prefer.

Having said all that, I appreciate this pattern very much because it simplified the whole process of making a bag. The French seams on the one side seam (did you catch that? one side seam, not two… brilliant!) and the bottom seam leave a nice and finished looking inside. The pattern is called simple and I’d say it really is. This morning, I plan to make 2 or 3 more to take with me to replenish my selection of bags at the bookstore.

  1. That looks really good. :)

  2. Wardeh,
I have wanted for so long to use cloth grocery bags, but I can’t imagine how many I’d need to transport all the groceries I buy every week! LOL!

    Sylvia,

Yes, I know! :D I have yet to make any for myself. I figure I need about 5 or 6 for the produce, eggs and chickens I bring home each week. But, I haven’t had time to make them. So I continue to ask for paper instead of plastic, at least knowing that I’ll use the paper.

    How many WOULD you need?

    Love, Wardeh

Thank you for having this available. My husband and I wanted some bags for the library, store, etc. We went online and saw the ridiculous prices not to mention the terribly liberal slogans. Many directed against Christians. We found your site and were pleased to see a Christian solution to our need. Thank you again and God bless your family.
