Thinking of Wool Hats
I don’t love knitting like I love to sew, but since I can’t sew when we’re watching a movie, I’ve been thinking about getting some knitting projects going.
What we really need are wool accessories to keep us warm during the winter. I’ll start with hats.
(Thinking ahead… I also want to copy a fleece headband/earwarmer that I’ve had since college. It would be nice to make some out of wool yarn and make them double layered. Can anyone direct me to a pattern? Or perhaps I’ll have to start from scratch. Or… I could felt some of the merino wool interlock I have coming to turn it into these head/ear bands.)
Today I ordered some yarn from KnitPicks.com. The yarn is the worsted weight Wool of the Andes. Haniya and Naomi will knit their own hats. They picked out their own colors — Winter Night for Haniya and Evergreen for Naomi. For Mikah, I picked Chocolate. For me, Coal. I don’t know what Jeff will want yet, but I think he’d like Chocolate also, so I got some extra of that and also some extra of the Coal, just in case. Whatever doesn’t get used up for hats can become those head/ear bands and/or scarves. (photo courtesy of KnitPicks.com).
The hat I’ll make is one I’ve knitted before. It is called Comfy Ribbed Hat out of the book Knitting Pretty by Kris Percival. The pattern calls for chunky yarn, but I use 2 strands of the worsted weight instead. I found an internet pattern that is similar — Chunky Ribbed Hat from Groovy Mom.

That is where I get a lot of my knitting patterns. I don’t know if it has what you are looking for, but I know that you will find something that you will like to do.
Thank you! Yes, I am sure that I will find something I like to do. That has never been my problem! Nor yours either, right?
Love, Wardeh
I have never knit in my life. Can you point me in a direction of how to go about learning? I have looked at some books at the library, but everything they have is on a more advanced level. Thanks!
Hi, Stacey! Knitting is really fun and really easy, once you get the hang of it.
I heard about a tutorial just today. It is http://www.knittinghelp.com/. I have not done it myself. Also mentioned was the fact that YouTube has knitting and crocheting tutorials. You’d have to dig through them to figure out if they would help you or not.
We do have a book that I’ve used to teach my girls how to knit. It is “Knitting” by Kids Can Press. The diagrams and explanations are so simple and so good that I would recommend it to anyone.
Do you have a local yarn shop? They may give lessons or steer you toward someone to teach you. Perhaps in your church you have a knitter. It really wouldn’t take much to get you started and I’m sure most people who know how would be thrilled to share you. If you lived here, I would help you.
Once you learn the basics, the internet has many, many free patterns. Usually they are marked basic, intermediate or advance. I usually stick with intermediate or basic because I prefer simpler patterns and I like to knit while watching or listening to something, which I can’t do if I have to be counting every stitch.
Hopefully this will help you. Please let me know if you need anything else. Love, Wardeh
I too need to get back to knitting, haven’t done it in years though I do crochet quite a bit. Both crafts are great for TV time or just visiting w/friends, yes I do do that and my friends aren’t offended as they know there is a good chance that they may be the recipient of whatever it is that I’m making.
You’re funny, Elaine. When I’ve had knitting spurts, I will even knit with friends. But I haven’t worked on anything for over a year. I do prefer sewing; it is much faster. But the SM and the TV don’t mix! What do you crochet? Love, Wardeh
That’s a really cute hat.
I love the colors you picked out. Are you done yet? LOL
Umm… no! The yarn isn’t even here yet! Love, Wardeh
I will crochet easy afghans/shawls or dishcloths if I won’t be able to really concentrate on a pattern. I do have several patterns/stitches that I can do almost blindfolded. Anything else I wait until I have quiet time to do.
Thank you for the wool resource. I have been looking for some wool to make scarves since November. I have some on hand that I spun myself but its not nearly enough.
So, are the hats done now?
Love
Sylvia
Oh, I’d love to spin wool myself someday. No… the hats aren’t done yet!
