New Release: Amazing Grace

Last night we watched a new movie which released last week — Amazing Grace.

We thought it was excellent. It stars Ioan Gruffud, who we love from watching Horatio Hornblower (and here). He plays William Wilberforce, a member of Parliament who attempts for 15 years to get Parliament to abolish Great Britain’s participation in the slave trade. It also stars other great English actors who we’ve seen in other period movies (our favorite genre).

William’s wife-to-be does show quite bit of cleavage in a party dress during parts of the movie. I think they have her dressed that way because it is historically accurate. The nice thing is that much of the time her curls are arranged to cover parts of her cleavage so it is not so eye-catching (but you can still see it).

The movie features a remake of Amazing Grace by Chris Tomlin. We had never heard the song before, but perhaps others have. All in all, it is a well-made historical drama.

I am planning on watching Amazing Grace over the weekend. I couldn’t rent it and the library didn’t have it. I decided to just go ahead and buy it. I just love a good period/costume drama.

Guess what, Wardeh — The dvd is in your box for Christmas. Everyone has raved about the movie, so I bought you and Jeremy each one. I guess I’ll have to keep your’s and watch it myself. Hmmmmm! :-)

Oh, dear! I guess you better watch it before you give it to us! (Yes, we will take it!) Love, Wardeh

This movie is in my ‘to view’ list, I adore period films. I’ve always been amazed at how much cleavage is revealed in historical garments. The first time I was strapped into an Elizabethan court gown I couldn’t believe how much of me was out there for the world to see! Thanks for the review, now I really want to see it. :)

How did it come to be that you wore an Elizabethan court gown? Drama or something like that? I’m sure I would be startled too! ~ Wardeh

I wore an Elizabethan gown when my husband and I were involved in the SCA, years ago. Normally I stuck to 14th century clothing, but my friend Tammie thought it would be fun to wear Elizabethan. In my opinion, there is nothing fun about a corset! *lol*

When I watch films like this I feel so proud to be English. Is that kind of ‘proud’ a bad thing? Newton who wrote that wonderful hymn lived a few miles from me..I’ve walked the same fields he used to walk as he hummed and composed. Beautiful countryside too…

Yvonne, that is so special. I’d be proud, too. We watch so many English movies and the countryside is the most inspiring part. You live in a beautiful area with a rich history. You are blessed. Love, Wardeh
