Brown Corduroy Jumpers & Latest Sewing

browncorduroyjumpers.jpg I have been sewing, I really have. These are brown corduroy jumpers I made for the girls last weekend. I also made the cream t-shirts that go underneath them. I had a hard time binding the jumpers using my coverstitch machine. The corduroy, folded as it went through the binder, was bulky. That made the stitching on the binding inconsistent and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it to make the stitching perfect. Oh, well.

I’ve also made each of the kids a practice pair of pj’s. I say practice because I was trying out a new pattern drafting system that I found at a thrift store. It is called Sure Fit Children’s Kit. Included are basic patterns — pants, shirts, skirts, collars, hoods, and more — that can be sized up from toddler to teenager. Using the child’s measurements, each pattern can be scaled up to fit them perfectly. I used the basic pants pattern to create their pjs out of thrift store knit. It really worked! I am pleased. Like I said, I found the Chidren’s Kit at a thrift store last week. It came in a box with a Sure Fit Dress Kit for women — all for $2.50.

I’ve done some mending, too. Jeff had a zip-up hooded sweatshirt that he wanted converted to a pull over. So I took out the zipper and seamed it up the middle. It still looks like a zip-up (which we like) but it doesn’t function like one. When my mom was here, I converted a turtleneck of hers to a regular bound neckline. And I’ve also made two denim tote bags that were a special order. So much more sewing to go… I’m itching to get at it. Perhaps Friday I’ll be able to sit down at my sewing table again.
