My sister pointed me in the direction of your blog and I’m so glad she did. I’m new to the blog world and have enjoyed all the knowledge and insight I can gain from others. I also enjoy writing and sharing about my life. I am a mother of two, Samuel (22 months) and Audrey (6 months), and although it seems far away now, my husband and I have seriously considered home schooling. I was a public school teachers for 4 years (LA/SS) before having kids. I love all the information you have shared and plan to look into the curriculum you are using.
I’m curious where you live. We just moved from Seattle to the Vancouver, WA area 3 months ago.
HI Wardeh! I am so happy for you that you are doing SL’s Core 5! That is by far my favorite core. There was so much to discover. This core really made my children realize that God is working all over the world and that we can be a part of His work. They loved studying different Eastern cultures and thinking of how much God loves all these people. I really can’t say enough about Sonlight 5!
We may go back to Sonlight for a year just so I can do this one again with my younger children. We did this one 4 years ago.
Love, Karen
That is so good to hear! Do you think I’ll be successful tailoring it for Naomi and Mikah? Naomi is 8 and Mikah is 7. I know they’re young but I *hope* it will work. What do you think? Love, Wardeh
Andrew and Mikah are doing very similar material. We did K core last year w/ 2nd grade readers. This year I bought some ‘fill ins’ for 1 and 2 and trying to hodge podge it together. we are doing singapore and miquon but math is NOT Andrew’s favorite subject so i need to be creative. We decided to do some geometry and are taking a lego / math class. For science we are doing God’s Creation series and Apologia Zoology. I’ll have to look at the Rainbow Rock CDRom. I looked at your schedule. WOW! I wish I was that organized. I think i have some adhd in me as well.
Amy
Rainbow Rock is great… fun practice for all the Singapore math concepts. I’m not that organized, Amy, really. A schedule helps us stay focused, including me.
Otherwise, I’d be off sewing all day… The lego/math class sounds neat. Mikah would love that! I’m happy for you that you’re modifying and finding good resources for teaching Andrew. God bless you! Love, Wardeh
Wardeh,
I stumbled upon you in my search for an egg-free pumpkin pie recipe. Then found out to my delight that you are not only a believer but a Sonlight user, too. We’ve used Sonlight almost exclusively (except for math, which we use Math-U-See and Spelling Workout by MCP) for at least 7 yrs now and, though it usually takes us all day long, we love it.
Think I can use almond butter instead of the almonds and water in the pie recipe and think it’ll go over at church OK??
Thanks. Clary
Hi, Clary. It is wonderful to meet another Sonlight user! 7 years, wow! Well, I guess we’re on our 6th year. It takes us much time of the day, too. But we enjoy it.
I don’t think that subbing straight almond butter for the almonds and water would work because almond butter is much thicker than almond-water paste. It calls for 1 cup of almonds, so I’d use 1/2 to 3/4 cup of almond butter and blend that with the 3/4 cup water. If the consistency that way is a little off, it wouldn’t make so much of a difference. If the pie batter is more watery, you’d have to bake longer and the reverse if it is thicker. I haven’t done it this way, so I can’t say for sure, but it would be something I’d try if I only had almond butter around. Almond butter is just ground up almonds, so adding water would make it the paste that the pie requires.
I think it would be great if you took it along to church. We’ve shared the pie with many people. They do notice a difference, mostly that you can taste so much more pumpkin. So, just a warning that it won’t be the same as what people expect. Those people who love conventional pumpkin pie for its super sweetness and evaporated milk base probably won’t like it as much.
We love it though, and most people with whom we’ve shared it enjoy it.
Thanks for stopping by, Clary. Hope this has been helpful. Love, Wardeh
Thanks, we’ll give it a try for tomorrow’s carry in. May even go to the store for the almonds! Try it the “real” way first to see how it works before doing more experiments, which doesn’t always work out too well, imagine that! I have the almond butter for Thai Chicken Fettuccine. It is great, but uses peanuts and peanut butter, so we substitute.
My darling children are 16 and 12 and soo busy! Guess that makes me busy, too.
Wardeh,
The sweet potato recipe went over great and so did the pumpkin pie, though in that context, the pie wasn’t quite sweet enough. I’ll use them from now on for our traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Thanks. Now to find an egg-free pecan pie!!
Thanks, Clary
That’s great! To make the pie sweeter, why don’t you add more sweetener and reduce the amount of water blended with the almonds? If you find a good pecan pie recipe, please share! Love, Wardeh
