Pattern Drafting Begins
I had a rocky weekend working on my new pattern drafting skills. Saturday was horrible; Sunday I had a breakthrough. I was working on the first two lessons concerning skirts. The first two skirts, the straight and the A-line, ended up fitting horribly. In addition to the challenges that my imperfect body presents, I don’t know how to do darts well.
The 2 books I am following — Dorothy Moore’s Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking and Claudia Ein’s How to Design Your Own Clothes and Make Your Own Patterns – don’t offer that much guidance with changing the darts for my particular body challenges.
So by the third skirt, I eliminated the darts and went for seams. The end result was a 4-gore boot-length skirt that fits really well. I can use that pattern to make a skirt with any number of gores. It turned out to be such a simple pattern to draft and it suits me. The panels replaced the darts and ended up fitting my body well. I will move on tonight to attempt another skirt variation and then soon move on to drafting pants.

Hi, Robin!
Hi Wardeh,
It seems like ages since I was into pattern drafting and making clothes for a living. You post brings back lots of memories. I hope it all goes well for you!
Well, Sylvia! Now I know who to turn to for help! And I need lots of it!
I didn’t know you made clothes for a living? I’d love to hear more.
Love, Wardeh
