Rag Quilt Gift Kit
For my daughter Haniya’s 9th birthday, I planned to make her a rag quilt. My husband wisely remarked that while she would cherish what I made for her, wouldn’t she be much more excited about being able to make her own quilt? So, we instead gave her a rag quilt kit.

Wardeh, this is such a great idea!! I am wondering if Haniya has started on this quilt or if she has used your sewing machine yet? I am wondering if you have any tips for teaching our daughters to use the sewing machine?
Thanks so much, Love Karen
Karen,
Haniya is done with the first row!
She is using my sewing machine.
We got a great book a few years ago that she worked through (with me right there) to get familiar with the sewing machine. It is called Sewing Machine Fun For Kids. We got it from http://www.timberdoodle.com. It was only about $8. It helped me know what to teach her and the activities in it were fun — crosswords, mazes, sewing paper Christmas ornaments.
This book is so good that I couldn’t improve on it!
Love, Wardeh
Dear Wardeh,
Is this the same book:

I think I will order it this week along with The Waltons season two. I am ordering it tomorrow from Amazon.com. We bought Emma and Beka a sewing machine for last Christmas and they haven’t used it yet. I would love for them to begin to make quilts with all of this lovely fabric we have.
Thank you for mentioning the book! xxx
Thank you Wardeh! That book might be a nice Christmas present for Rachel!
I love your new blog skin.
Love Karen
It would be a great Christmas present, Karen!
Yes, it is the same book! How wonderful that your girls have their own machine. Haniya is really wanting her own machine, although a friend of ours is going to loan her one for awhile. I didn’t get my own machine until I graduated from college. I had to share my mom’s (and she was always generous with it).
What a great idea!
Michaela likes making the quilt squares. She still is a little scared of the machine though. She gets nervous and pushes the peddle all the way down and then jumps.
Lawauna, that is so sweet! I’m sure she’ll get more comfortable as time goes on
Thanks for sharing.
