Friendship Star Quilt Top

I worked on it all yesterday afternoon and into the evening. I think it is so pretty. Every square is precious — coming from my sisters in Christ all around the country and even Canada. I am honored to have a piece of work that was fashioned by other loving hands.

This quilt is as special to Jeff as it is to me. He thinks it is amazing that a bunch of Christian homemakers from around the country who “only” know each other from the internet pulled this off. What a special, special quilt this is.

I added 3 more of my extra squares so I would have 16 and could arrange it in a 4 x 4 grid. I added 3″ sashings (in a dark denim blue rose pattern) and 4.5″ borders (in a light tan vine print) to make the quilt a 60″ x 60″ (or 5′ x 5′) size.

The girls wondered who it was for — I said, “Me!”

“You, Mom?”

You see, they aren’t used to me making things for myself. Well, this is gloriously for ME. I might let them use it every once in awhile, but only if I’m not using it! ;)

Finishing the rest will have to wait until I can make it to JoAnn’s to pick up the batting. I had to special order it since they were out last time I was there. JoAnn’s is in the larger city farther away, so I only make it there about once a month.

It is beautiful! If I had known you exactly when you were going to sew it, I would have sent you my FS star, Wardeh. Now I feel badly, because you’ve already made it. I was planning on mailing it with a certain birthday present this month.

    I’m sorry!

Oh, Robin! You don’t need to apologize. I feel as though I should for making you feel badly. So, I’m sorry! I thought your Friendship Star was a different size from the blocks we did in this swap. Or did I have it wrong? This is what I was thinking, so I was going to use your star for something else very special. If it is the same size then it will be easy to replace one of my extra blocks in the quilt with it. I am really looking forward to getting your block! Love, Wardeh

    Dear Wardeh,

You know, I don’t even remember what size it is. I believe I made them the same size as the ones in the swap. But, I am not for sure. My goal is to mail out the package by the last week of this month.

Have a lovely Thursday, Love, Robin

I am making Friendship Star patterns, but the points of the stars are at the end of the piece of fabric so when I put it together the end is “sewn off. There for the tips are gone.
I am making a 6″ block. I begin with 2 1/2 squares. The diagonals I make from 3″ squares and after sewing them, I square them up to 2 1/2.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much. Your quilt is beautiful!!!

Hi, Bonnie. I don’t have a suggestion, other than using as little of the seam allowance as you can get away with. It is a bummer that you don’t have any seam allowance left, but that happens to most quilters. If you’re losing the SA during your squaring down to 2-1/2″, then consider not squaring them down so far and having a bigger block as a result. I’m sorry I can’t totally solve this for you. Love, Wardeh
