Garden Plans
We are hard at work on school right now because we are all eager to get outside! The kids and I are going to be planting in one of the raised beds that our friends helped us build last weekend. We will fill it with all kinds of salad veggie seeds — carrots, onions, lettuces, spinach, and cabbages.
We have two other beds to fill, but not today. One of them I will fill with another crop of salad veggies in about a month or so. The third I will fill with a few tomato plants, a zucchini plant and some cucumber plants. Those I have to purchase because it is way too late for me to start them from seed. I hope to purchase them from an organic nursery on Friday when we make our Trader Joe's trip to a city far away…
We still haven't solved the deer issue. This morning, Jeff and I tentatively decided that this weekend we would use our salvaged fencing material to put up a fence around the garden area. Until then, I will lay a shade cloth over the beds to keep the birds from eating my seeds. I guess I should keep that on until everything is sprouted anyway.

Dear Wardeh,
How wonderful that you get to start planting.

Love, Robin
You mentioned planting “We will fill it with all kinds of salad veggie seeds — carrots, onions, lettuces, spinach, and cabbages”. Did you know that onion takes a really long time to grow from seed? Do you have a long season there? I waited too long to plant my onion seeds. One of my packets said that they could be planted in the Autumn and they would grow really big by Summer then. So, that is what I am doing. The started onion plants were on sale over a month ago and I didn’t get a chance to plant any. I am wishing I would have now. As soon as we get a few dry days in a row I am going to take more pictures of the progress of the plants. I can’t wait to see yours progress!
Oh, I just love gardening, don’t you?
Robin, we planted green onions… sorry I wasn’t very clear. I haven’t ever grown the other kind. The green onions grow more quickly than the big bulb kind. I do hope to see your progress!
My Dad uses several different ways to keep the deer out of his garden. One that works very well is to take a bar of Irish Spring ( or other heavily scented soap) and stick it firmly on a sharpened stick. Poke the end of the stick into the ground right by the garden. The scent of “people” helps to keep deer away from the garden. Use several bars for a big garden.
Another idea along the same line is to put a used work shirt on a stick around the garden. This ceases to work after a rain though. The soap continues to work every time it gets wet, so you can even wet it with a hose every now and then.
Sylvia, thank you for those suggestions! The soap one sounds so easy. I’ll mention it to Jeff and perhaps we’ll give it a try. The soap trick gets my vote!
